During her guesting on El Pueblo Publico on April 25, 2026, aired via DWIZ, Deanne Lorraine Cabalfin, Supervising Research Specialist at the òòò½´«Ã½, shared key findings on poverty and vulnerability in the Philippines.
While official data show that 11% of Filipino families are poor, the study points to a broader reality: around 30% of families are at risk of falling into poverty—including those not officially classified as poor.
She explained that many of these households rely on unstable or low-income sources, making them highly vulnerable to shocks such as job loss, illness, natural disasters, or rising prices of basic goods. In effect, the line separating the “non-poor” from the “poor” remains thin for many vulnerable families.
Her insights highlight the need to strengthen social protection systems, not only for the poorest, but also for vulnerable and near-poor families facing everyday economic uncertainty.
